Notes: New wind product:
These maps simply show the forecast's monthly deviations from the 46 year average as an arrow indicating the strength and
direction of the difference. Only the monthly data are presented, please contact us if you would find the seasonal data helpful.
The dashed contours shown on each map indicate where the forecast was different
to the mean of the model climatology at the 90% significance level according to a students T-test.
Although not the ideal test statistic it indicates where the model is more 'confident' that the forecast mean is
different to climatology. There are no guarantees that a significant deviation will be realised.
Important, please read (21/01/2011):
We have released the forecast that uses forecast SSTs provided by the CSIR in addition to the normal forecast that uses persisted SSTs. These are presented side by side for easy comparison here.
This is also included in the Verification page for South African rainfall.
We have not performed any qualitative tests on the results as we do not have enough data to do this yet. Please use the information presented here with caution as we cannot take any responsibility for decisions based on the maps. Please contact us if you have any comments or requests.
